Mark Kendrick’s Scandinavian Bands/Artist Series: Prologue

Scandinavian music, why is it so brilliant?  and why am I attracted to it?, aside from me being a near mirror image of Thor.

Most of the bands and artists I listen to are from the region. I have always been drawn to it. Maybe it was Abba being played around the house as a child, or my obsession in the 90’s with Roxette (which I still have today). European music has always had a hold on me, being Scandinavian music or Brit pop.

Firstly lets define what is Scandinavian according to Wikipedia:

Scandinavia  is a historical and cultural-linguistic region in Northern Europe characterized by a common ethno-cultural Germanic heritage and related languages. It comprises the three kingdoms of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. Modern Norway and Sweden proper  are situated on the Scandinavian Peninsula, whereas modern Denmark consists of Jutland and the Danish islands.

The term Scandinavia is usually used as a cultural term, but in English usage, it is occasionally confused with the purely geographical term Scandinavian Peninsula.

Sometimes in foreign usage, the term Scandinavia also includes Iceland, the Faroe Islands, and Finland, on account of their historical association with the Scandinavian countries and the Scandinavian peoples and languages.

So based on this I will use the generalised term for Scandinavian and use the countries Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Iceland.

I will attempt over the series to highlight my favourite bands/artists and give an insight to what I like and some background on them. Some will be well known and others not so much.

As start to this Prologue I will offer up a Top 20 of artists/bands. This is not so much a top 20 of my favourite but more as a general starting point for readers.
